Student testimonial

“My experience of doing an LLM in England enhanced my educational experience and gave me the chance to interact with people who came from different corners of the globe. Since public transport is excellent, I took the liberty to travel to exciting historical sites apart from visiting the countryside and coasts. My favourite was the summer trip to Brighton with my roommates!”
Bijetri Roy, 2013-2014 LLM, Queen Mary University of London

Expected tuition fees & living costs in England

Contrary to what people might say, studying in an English university is still an affordable choice and you can make the most of your stay by taking advantage of all the exciting things that it offers. Other places may not be able to offer you everything under one roof so you end up spending more.

The tuition fees and costs for LLM programs are reasonable in comparison to other universities abroad. There are several scholarships and bursaries offered by English universities many of which apply to international students. Typically full time LLM course fees range between £10,000 to £12,000 for UK/EU students and between £13,000 to £19,000 for non-EU students. This would differ for each university therefore you are advised to consult the particular university fee structure for updated guidelines.

With respect to living costs, it would essentially include food, local travel, social costs and any specific costs that you may need to incur if you were residing in a shared rental accommodation. Your rental costs should be between £4,000-£7,500 per year depending where you chose to live and study (London of course being your most expensive option). You will be in a position to study and enjoy social life at the same time if you have a well-planned budget and make the most of student discounts that apply to food and travel. The greatest advantage is that LLM courses in England (full-time) take much less time to finish (only 9 months!). This way you spend less on accommodation and travel.

Entry requirements

Entry criteria to LLM courses may differ from each university. While few require a first class degree in law, you will be expected to have a 2.1 grade (higher second class score). Some universities may consider previous legal experience for non-law graduates who studied substantial law content. For instance, non-law graduates with good honours who obtained the equivalent of good honours in CPE and Bar Finals/Legal Practice examinations, or passed the solicitors’ qualifying examination, could also qualify. However these criteria can be judged on showing exceptional professional experience and interest in the specialist course.

Graduates whose first language isn’t English would be required to have high IELTS (or equivalent) scores of 7 or above or TOEFL score of 107 or above. Because of ongoing changes in the law you are advised to regularly check with the university on updated requirements. Most individual institutions also have useful information on the Tier 4 requirements for international students.
