Franklin Pierce takes students to Silicon Valley to learn about IP law

Franklin PierceThe Franklin Pierce School of Law at the University of New Hampshire recently brought students to the iconic Silicon Valley to learn more about Intellectual Property law. 

Since its inception in the 1970s Franklin Pierce has been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in intellectual property (IP) law, and at the beginning of January a group of students were taught about IP Strategies for Today’s Industry by Professor Micky Minhas, VP and Chief Patent Counsel at Microsoft and Franklin Pierce Alum.

During the week at Silicon Valley the UNH Franklin Pierce students were taught about a range of IP law issues that are currently affecting corporate America to both inform them and to help prepare them for potential upcoming legal battlegrounds such as the Cloud and AI (artificial intelligence).

The students encountered various IP law issues through guest speakers from companies including Apple, Google, Facebook, Intel, TiVo, LG, USPTO, Unified Patents, Paypal, eBay, LinkedIn, Samsung, ServiceNow and Amazon. They also spent a day at the Microsoft office in San Francisco, where guest speakers included professionals from Dolby, Uber, Microsoft, and Via Patent Pool. Finally, the students enjoyed networking opportunities to enable them to develop professional relationships in the Valley.

Franklin Pierce offers one of the most comprehensive lists of IP courses in the US and has the largest full-time faculty in the field of IP, with half of its entire faculty boasting IP expertise. Franklin Pierce LLM students enrol in courses with the JD students as part of their curriculum, and study topics including Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies; Copyright Law; IP Issues in Sports and Entertainment Law; IP, Technology Transfer, Global Development; Mining Patent Info in the Digital Age; and Online Brand Management.
