How to prepare for an LLM interview
Do you have an upcoming LLM interview? Well, preparing for an LLM interview can seem quite challenging, but it doesn’t have to be.
Preparing for the LLM interview in advance will help you feel more confident about the admissions process and set your mind at ease, so you are ready to rock when it’s time for your interview.
Here we have some tips to give you some great advice on how to prepare for an LLM interview.
Research the LLM course
Getting to know about the course you are interested in applying to is crucial. It will also give you a good idea of the opportunities and career choices that LLM graduates go on to make. This kind of research can be done online or even by contacting alums from the school for their advice – they will usually be more than happy to help you.
Write your statement
Writing your LLM personal statement may seem like a daunting task, but it is one that you should look forward to because it will help you express yourself well. Knowing what to write about and staying focused on the message can be challenging for some people, so spend lots of time writing and rewriting it until you are 100% satisfied. If possible, ask your friends and family to read it and provide their thoughts before submitting it.
Dress smartly
Almost every interview that you will need to attend in life will require you to be presentable, and an LLM interview is no different. While presentable is relative depending on the career or job, an LLM interview probably requires wearing professional clothes – ie a suit or similar. Ensure that everything fits perfectly, is clean and ironed well – and most importantly is comfortable so you feel OK wearing it. Looking smart and wearing your clothes well will show the law school that you are taking this opportunity seriously and are ready to join them.
Be punctual
Being late for an interview is one of the worst first impressions you can make. If you need to, set multiple alarms to ensure that you are up way before your scheduled interview time. Also, if possible, travel to the school in advance of your interview so you can familiarise yourself with the location and find parking easily on the day of the interview.
Re-read application & personal statement
Before you go to the interview look over all the material you submitted and see all the answers you made. Most interviewers will use your application and personal statement as a baseline for asking you questions. This is one of the surest ways to know what they already know about you.
Practice interview skills
It’s a good idea to practice your interview skills before the big day so you can come across as more confident and relaxed. Even with all of our top tips, you might still freeze at the interview door so practising your interview skills is very important. You can do this by asking a friend or family member to interview you and take you through some common LLM questions to help build your confidence.
Relax beforehand
Although it is important to practice your interview skills you should also ensure that you relax before the big day. Many people become nervous when they know very well they have to put in so much effort to get the result they want. So take things easy and relax with loved ones or friends. You will be surprised how much this can do for your mental state.
Read up on common LLM interview questions
Preparing for common LLM interview questions may seem daunting, but fear not. LLM interviews are very much like other graduate school or job interviews because there are some common questions that you might want to be ready for. So ensure that you invest time in practising your answers so they can roll off your tongue on the day. Here are some common LLM interview questions that you may well be asked.
- Why did you choose the particular LLM course?
- What are your academic strengths?
- Please tell me about yourself?
- What makes you different from other candidates?
- What is your greatest strength?
- How will our course benefit you as a student and as a practitioner?
- What do you know about our school?
- Would you like to add anything else for our admissions?
In conclusion
An LLM interview is really just like any other interview. You need to be on top of your game when you go in for this one, and while it can be challenging, knowing what lies ahead will help you be prepared. You may feel nervous about the interview, but you need to appear confident during the interview if at all possible. And remember, it’s okay if your answer isn’t perfect; just be prepared and do your best, and the interviewer will make the final decision. Good luck – let us know how your LLM interview goes.
